Riverdale Creator Teases New Image Hinting A Zombie Storyline

Ever since the production resumed for Riverdale Season 5, fans have been constantly getting updates about its recent developments. From cast additions to plot changes involving time jump, the show has a lot in store for the upcoming season. Now, viewers get another glimpse of what the latest installment will look like after the showrunner dropped a new poster.

Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa recently shared to Twitter an intriguing new poster for Riverdale season 5. The image featured a gnarly, zombie-like hand coming out of the grave, with seemingly the Sweetwater River in the background. In its caption, Aguirre-Sacasa wrote, โ€œNothing stays buried forever.โ€

Moreover, he added the caption a series of emojis including a broken heart, a skull and crossbones, and an engagement ring. The post seemingly hints that someone from the past, presumably dead, will return to shake up things in the story.

Fans had their fair guesses as to who could potentially return in the seriesโ€™ fifth instalment. One speculation was Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines), whose body was found floating in the Sweetwater River in the series premiere. Meanwhile, another fan suspected it could be related to either Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) or Penny Peabody (Brit Morgan).

However, whether Riverdale season 5 will literally bring back someone from the dead or not remains to be seen. During its past four seasons, the series shied away from supernatural elements, unlike its sister series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Will Riverdale Season 5 feature a zombie storyline?

While Riverdale hesitated incorporating supernatural elements, season 5โ€™s seven-year time jump plot introduces the characters in a completely new situation. Hence, it will not be surprising to see the teen drama go in a different direction and try new genres. One likely option for season 5 will be to adapt the events of Afterlife with Archie. The comic book features the alternative reality of the fictional town, set at the onset of a zombie apocalypse.

While it makes the most sense, it might be a drastic step for a zombie storyline to appear so late in the series. In other words, the recent poster could also just be a metaphor to further hype fansโ€™ excitement.

Rather than a resurrection of the dead, the image could refer to someone whoโ€™s long gone and suddenly shows up. There are a handful potential candidates, and considering the showโ€™s nature, the fifth series may deliver yet another unexpected twist.
