I don’t like Zack Snyder’s movies. I think they’re mean, and joyless, and treat humans like garbage to be killed or beaten or abused at the whim of a director who doesn’t really care about what he’s doing, only about how it looks (see Man of Steel review for more).

But it turns out, according to Zack Snyder, I’m wrong. Zack Snyder’s movies, you see, are smart. It’s just that WE are stupid.

Blastr breaks down a conversation Snyder had about his version of Watchmen (an okay film, and Snyder’s best). In it, Snyder claims that his version of Watchmen was better than another version developed for Terry Gilliam but never actually made (surprise!). He then runs on and on about how important it is to be true to the source material-which Chris Kaye at Blastr gets absolutely right: that is not a virtue. By itself, dedication to source material is meaningless. Be true to the story you are telling, sir, not your source material. Anyway.

Snyder concludes his totally ridiculous self-defense with this almost unbelievable statement of arrogance:

I always believe the movies I’ve made are smarter than the way they are perceived by sort of mass culture and by the critics. We set out to make smarter movies than what they’re perceived to be, do you know what I mean?

You see what he did there? He said his movies are smarter than the way audiences or critics (or basically everyone else) perceive them. If only you were Zack Snyder, you’d totally get what Zack Snyder was trying to do and how smart and great his movies are.

Please tell me how Sucker Punch is smarter than I perceive it. Because I perceive it as a masochistic piece of shit.
