Proving, once again, that they are the best magazine out there, The Believer has put Girls auteur Lena Dunham and YA author Judy Blume in conversation for a limited edition book.
EW calls them “unlikely gal pals,” but this pairing makes total sense—both are known for their smart and often sexually frank work, and it doesn’t surprise me at all to learn that Dunham was a fan of Blume’s novels growing up, or that Blume, for her part, is a vocal admirer of Girls.
Both EW and the AV Club are running excerpts from the book. Among the more fun revelations is that Blume, as a girl, wasn’t interested in the sorts of books she was supposed to be reading for school—so she wrote book reports on made-up books, and got straight As on them. (Not a bad way to get started as a novelist!) The AV Club’s excerpt focuses more on sexuality, and the sexual confessions both Dunham and Blume get from fans—with some bonus ruminating on teens having sex and the slut-shaming debate.
The book is available to subscribers to The Believer. Just one more reason to subscribe to one of the best magazines out there.
