Lost Doctor Who episode has been found

It’s a good day for Whovians. The BBC confirms that nine missing episodes of the classic sci-fi series have been discovered in, of all places, a television transfer station in Nigeria.

There are many more episodes of the series still missing, though with this discovery the number of lost episodes has gone down from 106 to 97. In a decision that has to go down as one of the worst decisions of all time, the BBC junked the episodes in the 1960s and 70s, either to make more room in their archive for additional tapes, or because the rights agreements with the actors involved had expired.

A Google search of “Doctor Who missing episodes” yields an entire Wikipedia entry dedicated to the topic. It’s a wonderful little piece of pop culture arcana and a story of intrigue featuring events with names like “The Levine Intervention.”

According to the entry, the most sought-after episode, which features (spoiler alert, I guess?) the First Doctor morphing into the Second, is not among the episodes that have been discovered.
