WB CEO: We need to get Wonder Woman on the big screen or TV

Recently, we mused about the possibility that Warner Brothers was casting for Wonder Woman, with the intention of introducing her in Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman. It’s a difficult, important prospect for DC and WB.

But you cannot have the Justice League without Wonder Woman. And as WB has made clear their intent to make a Justice League film, eventually they’ll need to overcome the hurdles and introduce Wonder Woman.

On that front, news from Warner Brothers CEO Kevin Tsujihara. In an interview quoted at Hollywood Reporter, Mr. Tsujihara said of the DC Universe:

“Tsujihara said that the lack of superhero movies other than the Superman and Batman franchises had been a “missed opportunity,” but added that the studio had “huge plans for a number of other DC properties on TV.” Perhaps one hint in that direction: “We need to get Wonder Woman on the big screen or TV.”

That’s no small statement, as the difficulty of bringing Wonder Woman to the big-screen has never been overcome. And even on the small-screen, Wonder Woman is a challenge. Still, Tsujihara is right: whatever the difficulties, the opportunity Wonder Woman provides WB and the DC Cinemative Universe is massive.

Here’s hoping they can get Wonder Woman right.

Mr. Tsujihara also told the audience that Gravity was a risky film to make, and they should all “go see it tonight!” A recommendation we support.

  2. I’d like to see something done with Wonder Woman, but my concern is Joss Whedon took a run at it and nobody at DC/WB cared for it. If Whedon can’t find a way to make Wonder Woman happen, can anyone? We’re talking about the guy who A) created Buffy, the ultimate female teen heroine, and B) turned the Avengers into the biggest movie on the planet. Ass kicking fems and superheroes are his forte. So I can’t imagine they’ll find a better talent match for the material. And if that’s the case, I’d be really concerned about the quality of an WW product moving forward.

    • I get that. Would have been something to see Whedon’s take on Wonder Woman.
But I also wonder if Buffy might have prevented Whedon from being able to make a Wonder Woman movie, at least at the time. I can imagine his reputation with ‘ass kicking fems and superheros’ being as much a problem as an asset, especially when trying to make the first WW film.

There are other artists out there that can make Wonder Woman work.
