Yesterday Grand Theft Auto 5 was released. The game had a reported budget of $265 Million, making it the most expensive video game ever produced. For perspective, if Grand Theft Auto 5 were a film, it would be the 3rd most expensive film ever made (behind Pirates of the Caribbean: At the World’s End and Tangled and just ahead of John Carter and Spiderman 3).
Today comes the follow-up story to GTA’s debut: in the 24 hours since its release, the video game earned $800 Million. In one day. For that kind of earning, there is no comparison.
The performance breaks the previous record, set by Call of Duty: Black Ops II, by $300 Million. That doesn’t even count as a previous record. It’s more like a wink on the way to a new standard of measurement.
By all accounts GTA 5 is the best in the series, and as divisive as ever.
