Locke & Key, Netflix’s original series has been renewed for season 3 ahead of its season 2 premiere. Filming of season 2 is wrapping this week in Toronto, with season 3 production set to commence in early 2021. Season 2 of the show was announced back in March, and set to release in 2021.
In a social media post in its official account featuring the cast of the series, Netflix confirmed the news. It wrote, “Locke and Key fans, the cast has some news for you: The show has been picked up for Season 3! But first, Season 2 will arrive in 2021!”
Aside from this exciting announcement, Locke & Key co-showrunner Meredith Averill has also signed an overall deal with Netflix. This would set her up to develop multiple projects or shows in the near future for the streaming platform.
“I’m incredibly grateful to have found a home at Netflix where I feel constantly supported, challenged and inspired,” Averill said of the deal. “I look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship.”
Brian Wright, vice president of overall deals for Netflix, also expressed his excitement over Averill’s partnership with their company. “I’m delighted to expand our creative partnership with Meredith Averill, a talented creator with a keen eye for best-in-class horror and supernatural storytelling,” he said.
Meanwhile, series co-showrunner Carlton Cuse teased fans about the upcoming season. “We have some incredible adventures in store for the Locke family in season three, and could not be more excited to continue telling our story with our great partners at Netflix,” he said.
“Carlton and Meredith have built an incredible world in ‘Locke & Key’ and we’re excited to have the Lockes return for more in the third season,” agreed Wright.
What is the Locke & Key series all about?
Locke & Key is based on Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s comic book of the same name. It follows the titular Locke family moving into their deceased father’s family home. Shortly after arriving, the children – Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode – discover mysterious keys that can be used to open various doors. These lead them into otherworldly journeys and adventures.
While critics say the series toned down a lot of the horror elements compared to its source material, the show was overall well-received. It was even compared to some successful Netflix hits like the Stranger Things and The Haunting of Hill House. Given the series’ previous success, it is not surprising that Netflix renewed the supernatural horror drama for a new season. Although it will be a while before we see it, Locke & Key is a series to watch out for.
