Queen of the South season 5 is finally back to grind following months of inactivity caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Fans of the crime drama have been eagerly awaiting its return after a dramatic cliffhanger in the series four finale. Alice Braga who plays the show’s protagonist Teresa Mendoza, took to Instagram stories to share snaps from the QOTS set. Firstly, she posted a screenshot of her alarms scheduled at 3:55 and 4:00 in the morning respectively. “Back to work #queenofthesouth,” she writes as a caption.

Braga then again shared another snap from the set’s backstage with one of the show’s production staff. This time, the two had plastic face shields on as part of the safety protocols implemented by the show.

What can we expect from Queen of the South season 5?

Having just recovered from a coma, the New Orleans drug queenpin faces her biggest challenge yet when the series returns. Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) will need all the help she can get to take down Judge Lafayette (Cecil Andrews).

Thankfully, Alejandro Barrios will be reprising his role as Chicho in the upcoming installment. Chicho acted as Teresa’s sicario in the fourth season which proved to be crucial in her takeover plans. As the action heats up, he could be a force to reckon with as her journey to become queen continues.

Director and stunt coordinator Ben Bray confirmed his return in a behind-the-scenes photo taken on set of season 5. He wrote, “Always exciting to see familiar faces on set like the one and only “Chicho” @alejandro.barrios1, a talented pro on set and one of the kindest human beings ever!”

Another highly-anticipated plot is the return of her ex-boyfriend James Valdez (Peter Gadiot), suggesting yet another threat to Teresa’s operations.

“Yes!!! It is another @petergadiot citing! He’s back and James is better than even this season! @queenonusa fans will be pleased,” Bray also wrote in an Instagram post.

Queen of the South will air on USA Network when it returns for season 5, and will stream online via Netflix.
