Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 recently premiered with Michael Burnham’s arrival into the far future. The timeline reveals she jumped over 900 years later from when she left. Star Trek: Discovery originally kicks off in 2256, ten years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. With the miscalculated time jump into the future from season 2’s finale, what timeline is Discovery season 3 exactly at?
Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Recap
Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery ended in very dramatic fashion. Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham and her crew find themselves defending an all-knowledgeable data sphere from Control. Control is a dangerous AI program threatening to wipe out all organic life. The Discovery’s only option is to warp both itself and the data sphere into the far future through a wormhole. In that way, the sphere is taken out of the Control’s reach.
Where does Discovery fit into the Star Trek timeline?
Star Trek: Discovery begins ten years prior to Kirk and Spock’s adventures in The Original Series. Set in 2256, the series takes place within the prime continuity that incorporates the other 5 main TV shows and movies up to Star Trek: Nemesis.
Following that is the animated series, then Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek: The Next Generation. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comes after and then Star Trek: Voyager. The three latter shows briefly overlap at various points in the timeline.
After Voyager, new animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks happens, followed by recent series entry Star Trek: Picard. Now, nearly 800 years past that, Star Trek Discovery resumes for season three. In other words, the USS Discovery has come far beyond the world of Star Trek that we know. Lost in a whole new era, the crew is surely up for a big challenge.
