Outlander Season 6: Why The Show Hasn’t Begun Filming Yet?

Production has recently resumed for most of the shows whether for television or online content. Unfortunately, fan-favorite time-travelling drama Outlander is not among those that have gone back to work already. Why can’t the series start filming yet? Executive producer Maril Davis reveals to us the real reason.

The Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe starrer has always taken a long time to be produced. Prior to season 6, the ‘droughtlander’ lasted a year, with a nine-month production gap between season 4 and season 5. The last two installments were eventually released in January 2019 and February 2020 respectively.

On October 23, Maril Davis answers on Twitter a fan’s query about the show’s production for season 6. She writes, “We have not started filming yet. Traditionally, we don’t announce our production start date until we’re actually in production!”

As a result, viewers have started wondering what the reason behind the delay is. Davis opens up the truth on why filming is not able to begin just yet.

Why has Outlander season 6 hasn’t begun filming yet?

Speaking back in September, Davis explains that the historical drama is not a COVID-friendly show. “Obviously with everything going on right now, we’ve been a little slowed down. We are going to be shooting season six. That has been slowed down as well,” she said.

“We will come back once we feel like it’s safe to do so with our crew and our cast. We don’t have the kind of show, unfortunately, that can be COVID friendly.”

Davis adds that Outlander presents a lot of difficult challenges. One is the number of extras needed to film Season 6 and the intense romance scenes required from some characters. Season 6 presents the impending war between America and Britain. In other words, a whole lot of extras are needed to film the series. However, now is just not the time for such a large production to be off the ground.

“That’s something that a lot of studios are talking about, and some shows have the luxury to do that, we do not,” explains Davis.

“It’s the least COVID-friendly show ever. It means that maybe there’s no kissing, there’s no interaction, there’s not a lot of actors and extras. So honestly, it’s been a conversation that’s been happening since everyone shut down but we’re still here. I think we’ll still be here so hopefully we’ll get a couple more seasons going on and hopefully we’ll be making this for a long time.”

While Davis seems to hint affirmatively for future seasons, there is going to be a longer wait to contend with.

Outlander season 6 will be based on Diana Gabaldon’s sixth novel A Breath of Snow and Ashes. This period will see the Frasers dealing with the approaching American Civil War.

Outlander season 6 lacks an official release date as of the moment, but previous episodes can be streamed via Amazon Prime.
