Starz’ time-traveling drama Outlander concluded season 5 this year and is set to return for season 6. The TV series debuted in 2014 and has since grown popular among viewers. But, how much longer will the show go on?
Outlander first premiered on US network Starz, adapting its storyline from the books of Diana Gabaldon. The series follows star-crossed lovers Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), who were brought together by fate.
Over the years, the show has accumulated a huge number of fans worldwide who fell in love with the drama. The series has been on screens for six years now and it looks like there will continue doing so.
Moreover, Gabaldon confessed that the book series which inspired Outlander, will have a total of 10 installments. She plans to end her story there. So far, eight novels have been published and the American author is currently working on the ninth book.
Titled “Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone,” the ninth installment is expected to come out this 2020.
How many seasons of Outlander will there be?
As of the present, there have been five seasons of Outlander in total, with varying in lengths per installment. Season 1 was the longest, having 16 episodes in total, while season 5 was the shortest with only 12. The rest of the runs have 13 episodes each, so it’ll be hard to predict how long the future seasons will be.
The future of Outlander ultimately depends on viewership ratings and on Starz’ renewal orders for future seasons of the show.
However, in a Twitter Q&A, star Heughan spoke about his dreams for the drama’s future. A fan asked, “How are you feeling with Outlander close to an end? Any plans what you are going to do next?”
Heughan cheerfully responded, “I hope we continue for years. There have been discussions. Just hope you all keep watching!x.”
From his reply, it is evident that he wants the show to keep going.
So far, Outlander has adapted one novel for each season. Hence, if the producers will continue to follow this pattern, there could be a total of 10 seasons.
When will Outlander Season 6 be released?
In a Twitter post, UK Casting revealed that filming for Outlander Season 6 will finally commence in January 2021.
With the filming being pushed back to 2021, we may not be able to see season 6 sooner. It is predicted that the show may air sometime in 2021 or even early 2022.
