Queen of the South has had one of the most interesting mixes of characters since it first launched in 2016. Molly Burnett who played Kelly Anne Van Awken is one of the most memorable characters in the drama. Appearing in the series since season 2, would season 5 be the end that would seal her character’s fate?
Kelly Anne Van Awken is the wife of abusive husband Cole Van Awken (Brett Cullen). Cole owns the law firm that arranged the acquisition of the trawling company as per Camila Vargas’ (Veronica Falcon) orders. Kelly then helped Teresa (Alice Braga) by exposing Cole and Camila’s conspiracy against her and eventually took her side.
As the series progresses, Kelly and Teresa grow closer. When Cole threatens Teresa’s life, Kelly saves her and ends up shooting him in the head. After seeing her risk life for her sake, Teresa gains confidence in Kelly’s loyalty. She asks her help to run away and to look after Tony Parra (Adolfo Alvarez), Teresa’s godson, to keep him safe.
However, things took a turn in season 3 when Kelly was revealed to be a mole leaking information to the CIA. She confesses but says that she did it so she could protect Teresa from doing a dangerous deal with another cartel. Feeling betrayed, Teresa orders James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) to kill her.
In season 4, Kelly makes a surprise comeback which shocked Teresa as she believed she was dead. The truth is, James let her escape instead of killing her.
She becomes determined to help and win back Teresa’s trust so she sticks around. Moreover, Tony relies on her which made Teresa reluctantly agree to keep her alive. She eventually forms a relationship with Pote Galvez (Hemky Madera).
Is Kelly Anne going to die in Queen of the South season 5?
USA Network recently announced that Molly Burnett’s character has been promoted as a series regular for season 5.
While it doesn’t guarantee anything, Kelly could most likely make it at least to the end of the fifth series. After all, Teresa did want her dead so she could only be biding time before she kills her eventually. Hence, Kelly may still be killed off in the finale.
On the other hand, before it happens, fans will be seeing more of her when the show does return.
Queen of the South season five production started back in March 2020. However, filming was suspended after the coronavirus pandemic, and so there has been a major delay in creating new episodes.
If filming successfully wraps before the end of 2020, Queen of the South is highly likely to return in 2021.
While waiting for Queen of the South season 5’s release, seasons 1-4 are available to watch on Netflix.
