Spider-Man 3, Marvel Studios’ third feature film on the web-slinger starring Tom Holland is reportedly bringing back previous Spider-Man actors. Rumors say Andrew Garfield will return as Spider-Man, reprising his role from the Amazing Spider-Man films. However, Garfield is not the only one reportedly in talks to return for the latest MCU film. Tobey Maguire, another past Spider-Man actor, is also rumored to appear in the movie.
Production for the latest film is currently underway and details about its cast suggest it will play with the multiverse. Previously, Benedict Cumberbatch was confirmed to appear as Doctor Strange, whose film sequel’s title also hints at a multiverse play (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). In addition, Jamie Foxx will return as Electro, the villain from Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. More recently, Alfred Molina was revealed to return as Doctor Octopus after playing the villain in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2.
Now, the latest rumors purport that two past Spider-Man actors will be returning to share the screen with Holland’s web-slinger. Collider reported that Garfield will appear in the MCU film as well as Emma Stone, reprising her role as Gwen Stacy. However, a confirmation about it has yet to be made as of today. Tobey Maguire is also in talks to return for Spider-Man 3, with Kirsten Dunst set to come back as Mary Jane Watson.
Will Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire appear in Spider-Man 3?
Sony has previously denied reports that Garfield and Maguire would return for Spider-Man 3. However, with the recent inclusion of villains from their franchises, it is possible that Holland’s Peter Parker ran across the superheroes who battled them. Should it happen, fans will have to look forward to Garfield or Maguire’s roles playing out in Spider-Man 3. One theory proposes that Holland and perhaps Doctor Strange, jumps from one universe to another, running into Garfield and Foxx’s Electro in one, and Maguire and Molina’s Doc Ock in another.
The prospect of seeing Holland, Garfield and Maguire’s Spider-Man characters unite on screen may indeed be exciting. However, it is yet unknown how exactly its set-up will play out. Past superhero movies, including Spider-Man movies have suffered from being overstuffed. As a result, some feel concerned by the number of characters reported to appear in Spider-Man 3. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has proven its capability to balance many characters in its film, but it doesn’t automatically guarantee success. For now, it remains to be seen how the two previous Spider-Man characters will fit into the MCU’s Spider-Man 3.
