It has been three years since the award-winning Made in Abyss has graced the smaller screens. Rumors of a second installment has also been going around for three years.
Without any trailer or update about the second season of Made in Abyss, the audience is only holding onto sheer hope – that season two is going to be an even bigger success. No word from the series creators, not even the cast.
The Plot of Made in Abyss Season 2
Made in Abyss is an anime adapted from a manga of the same name, created by Akihito Tsukushi. It is set in a world where a huge rift known as the abyss houses mysterious creatures. The story follows a little orphan girl named Riko and her dreams of becoming a “delver” like her mother.
For anyone’s reference, a delver goes on adventures, discovers caves, pits, et cetera.
Basically, Riko is a novice and does not know much of what she’s getting herself into which is why she is only permitted to explore the upper realms of the abyss. That’s also where she stumbles upon a robot that very much looks like a boy. She names him Reg and he does not seem to have any recollection of how he got there. Riko assumes that the answers to her questions about Reg is in the depths of the abyss. They embark on this amazing yet terrifying journey to the abyss, no knowledge of what’s in there and what could happen to them.
While the audience has been waiting for the second season, three compilation films were released. Fans are speculating that this is an effort by the creator to buy time and somehow pacify the Made in Abyss Fandom. Two of the films were released in January 2019 – Journey’s Dawn and Wandering Twilight. The third compilation film was initially released in Japan last January 2020 but releases in other countries were postponed indefinitely because of the pandemic.
As for the plot in the Made in Abyss’ second season, there is no word from the creator on which aspects of Riko’s life it would explore.

There is no word of a franchise renewal or ongoing production. Season 1 was released on July 7th in 2017.
