Today, StarWars.com announced that director Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi, Brick, Looper) has been hired by Disney to create a brand new Star Wars film trilogy that departs from the Skywalker family narrative of the original saga. Johnson will write and direct the first film in the brand new trilogy, which will explore parts and characters of the Star Wars galaxy that, as of yet, have been unexplored.

Most Star Wars fans are super excited for…well…even more Star Wars for years to come. However, some have expressed frustration toward the announcement of the new trilogy which they feel seems a bit unnecessary when positioned next to nine films, two TV series, and a holiday special and three standalone projects.
