Hot off StarWars.com this morning we received the news that following Colin Trevorrow’s (Jurassic World) exit as director from the forthcoming Star Wars Episode IX, for which we give thanks, the as yet untitled Star Wars saga finale has a new director! We all did the collective cringe when we heard that George Lucas had put in his name as one who wanted to return as director, didn’t we?
But, after successfully reviving Star Wars with 2015’s The Force Awakens, the Force has proven to be stronger with J.J. Abrams, as he officially returns to direct and co-script Episode IX with Chris Terrio. Abrams directed his finest piece with The Force Awakens and he paid special attention to the “hand-made” detail of Lucas’s original film.
As exciting as it is to have Abrams back in the director’s chair, fans are expressing concern. The Force Awakens was accused of being a carbon copy of A New Hope. There is concern that he will take the same approach with Episode IX and give us Return of the Jedi 2. Wherever you stand in that ongoing debate, it is good news to have the capable and creative Abrams back on board over and above the likes of hack Trevorrow and washed-up Lucas.
