There has been talk, for years, about a sequel or prequel to The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson’s 1982 film (one of my favorites as a kid). The prequel idea went pretty far, it turns out, and Brian Froud, the artistic director from the original movie, designed three graphic novels called The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths, in which we learn the origins of the fascinating world imagined by the great Jim Henson.
Yesterday, Netflix surprised us with a trailer, revealing that a new series called The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is currently in the works with Jim Henson studios. Like Froud’s work, it is a prequel series about three Gelflings who set out to unite the good beings of their world against the cruel Skeksis.
I will admit, I am nerding out a bit. Netflix’s peak at the project has Henson himself speaking about the fact that The Dark Crystal was the work he was “the most proud of.” That being said, if Netflix butchers this series, possibly three generations of fans will speak their minds. Please, Netflix, don’t ruin this.
