Here’s a brief News Special on the 20th anniversary of the War of 1996.

This is so dumb and so awesome; pure Starship Troopers.

If this news clip is a sign of the direction Independence Day: Resurgence is going, then I am all in. This level of self-aware propagandistic stupidity is rarely achieved in big sci-fi movies (usually the dumb propaganda is unintentional, or worse, sincere). Placing Roland Emmerich’s history of big dumb movies on the intentional / unintentional propaganda scale has always been a sticky task.

Surely this shifts him to the Verhoeven camp, yes? I hope there is more, even better awesome dumb stuff to come from ID2.

Afterthought: The united global effort to defeat an alien invasion is really remembered as the War of 1996? C’mon, guys. We can do better than that.
