There it is. The first look from DC and Warner Bros. at Wonder Woman. Unfortunate that it’s not an actual trailer that might give a sense of the film and its story, but apparently the suits at WB aren’t convinced yet that Wonder Woman can stand alone. Instead, audiences are told by the filmmakers that Wonder Woman is cool, and strong, and fights tough but cares and has trained her whole life for war. Also feminism and equality.
Affirming all this information is the bobble-headed Kevin Smith. Presumably because guys like superheroes and Kevin Smith and if Kevin Smith thinks that Wonder Woman is a cool badass then just maybe she is!
Wonder Woman is, of course, totally badass. Her creation as a fictional character and her origin story as a hero are both full of all kinds crazy.
I was particularly excited about the prospect of a Wonder Woman film when Michelle McLaren was attached to direct. Her departure was, as is usually the case, an unfortunate sign from DC/WB, who did not share McLaren’s vision for the character. Patty Jenkins is now directing. She directed the excellent Monster in 2003; this is her first foray back to the big-screen.
We really know nothing about Jenkins’ rendition of Wonder Woman, other than her film is set in World War I (awesome, btw). But there is plenty of time to speculate. Wonder Woman is still more than a year away, releasing in June 2017. The only fact we have about this move? It is another installment in a superhero cinematic universe that has, to date, released one bad film: Man of Steel. Screwing up Wonder Woman would be a real shame, so let’s give Patty Jenkins the benefit of the doubt, and expect great things from WW.
No matter how Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice might turn out.
