This week, we’re discussing the eccentric, sometimes funny, sometimes harrowing film, Kumiko,The Treasure Hunter. Kumiko is a Japanese office assistant who finds a vhs copy of the Coen Brothers film Fargo, and sets her life to the task of finding the buried suitcase of money that remains unclaimed at the end of Fargo.
Is Kumiko a comic fantasy, or a portrait of mental illness and the troubling isolation caused by modern culture? Is it a beautiful, haunting character study or a boring slog of repetition? Courtney Algeo returns to the table to talk about this strange movie.
