Some oh my god news hit the internet this morning, when it was announced that comic-book badasses Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick have signed a deal with Universal TV to adapt their work for television, as well as work on original show concepts.
The deal includes a TV adaptation of Sex Criminals, the hilarious sci-fi sex comedy written by Fraction and illustrated by Chip Zdarsky. Fraction and DeConnick started Milkfed Criminal Masterminds, which Deadline reports the couple plans to use as a platform to bring other comics creators to television.
Kelly Sue DeConnick-a favorite at The Stake-is currently writing Bitch Planet for Image comics, as well as Pretty Deadly, currently on hiatus. She’s also the author of Marvel’s Captain Marvel (who is getting her own movie in 2017), and has written Avengers Assemble, and going way back, the excellent character-study graphic novel Osborn.
Matt Fraction meanwhile is a multiple Eisner Award winning writer currently writing two of the industry’s most accomplished and beloved books: Marvel’s Hawkeye, and Image Comics Sex Criminals, as well as a host of other Marvel and Image titles worth checking out. They’re a talented couple, to put it mildly.
The idea of bringing Sex Criminals to TV is a puzzling prospect, but one that cannot help but bring a smile to the faces of those familiar with the book. Volume 1 of the story follows Suzie and John, lovers who, at the moment of orgasm are able to sop time, and thus undertake a plan to rob a bank to save a library, but who end of up being pursued by the frozen-time-because-sex police. The book is so human and empathetic, but also funny, sexually frank, and just the right amount of dark. Volume 2, coincidentally, is on sale today.
It could make a bonkers television show.
