The Alien film franchise is a tough one. It’s produced one masterpiece (Ridley Scott’s Alien), at least one really good film (James Cameron’s Aliens), an interesting failure (David Fincher’s Alien 3), and a lot of duds (Alien: Resurrection, Alien vs. Predator). Even Ridley Scott’s kinda-sorta return to the franchise with Prometheus was disappointing.
But this morning comes news that should please anyone who loves the franchise and holds out hope that it can regain some of its former glory. Neill Blomkamp, the filmmaker behind District 9 and the forthcoming Chappie, is now slated to direct an Alien movie. This is in addition to Prometheus 2, which by all accounts will still be directed by Ridley Scott himself.
Blomkamp commented on the news with some fun Alien art on Instagram.
Here’s hoping that we’re finally, after many years, due for another really, really good Alien movie.
The Alien Franchise is very strange at this point, diverting it’s way through oh so many visions and failures. But Blomkamp is capable of high quality sci-fi storytelling, and originality to book. Here’s hoping.
I’m really skeptical of them bringing back anyone besides Ripley. Devin Faraci sums up my feelings fairly well.
