DC Comics will have something for everyone. In June.

dc heroesA big announcement comes form DC Comics today. They’re releasing 24 new titles on June 2, in a move they’re calling “going back-to-basics.” Here’s DC co-publisher Dan Didio:

This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us. Whether you’ve been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics – there will be a book for you beginning in June.

All criticism aside-and there is plenty to find in DC of late-it is exciting news to hear DC Comics addressing their lack of diversity and reach. DC has been reluctant to change their lineup or tone, despite the clearly changing landscape of comic books. That is no secret, of course, even at DC. And this announcement comes with full recognition of the problem: We’re diversifying, making room for new kinds of storytelling, adding fans, etc.

DC’s press release is full of the inclusive language on matters of representation and character: “contemporary tonality”, for example, will be applied to the legendary characters. There will be “fresh voices,” and an “expansive lineup” that will offer “something for everyone” who is looking for a book to read.

This does not mean that DC’s throwing everything out and starting fresh. 25 existing titles that readers love now will remain, and their continuity will continue. They’re just making room for more. More characters, more stories, more fans.

Which is great. Seriously. Congratulations DC Comics. Lets hope your books are up to the challenge. A good sign, again, comes from Didio: “In this new era of storytelling, story will trump continuity as we continue to empower creators to tell the best stories in the industry.”
