The Golden Globe Nominations are out this morning, marking yet another long list of films for you to think about seeing around Christmastime before eventually deciding to suffer through The Hobbit.
Among the Best Picture, Drama nominees is Boyhood (which, if there is a favorite heading into awards season I’d say it’s Boyhood) which picked up five, including Picture, Director, Screenplay, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress. The Imitation Game also picked up five; Selma and The Theory of Everything four, and Foxcatcher, three.
The Best Picture, Comedy or Musical, category is led by Birdman, which leads all nominees with seven. I’m surprised to see St. Vincent nominated in the category since I have heard almost no mention of the film, anywhere, since its release.
A few first-take interesting notes:
Ava DuVernay is nominated for Best Director for Selma. If DuVernay wins she’ll be the first African American woman to win the award, and the first woman since Barbara Streisand for 1983’s Yentl.
Meryl Streep was nominated for the 4,534th time for Into the Woods. But there are a few actors given nominations that show some reach by the Globes. Jennifer Anniston received her first (film) nomination for Cake. I hear she’s amazing in the role. Meanwhile, Steve Carell’s nod is not a surprise, but it’s still worth noting. STEVE CARELL! It’s been a great year for the Stevphens.
Joaquin Phoenix recieved the only nomination for P.T. Anderson’s Inherent Vice. Based on its early reception, I expected to see a few more.
Finally, award shows still love biopics.
More on the awards as we have time to digest.
The Golden Globes Ceremony is on January, 11. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will, thankfully, host.Check out the full slate of nominees below.
