Independence Day 2 begs the question: How will Roland Emmerich Destroy the White House?

And so it appears that the 1996 blockbuster smash Independence Day will have a sequel (or two). While Will Smith’s return remains a question, that which matters most is true: Jeff Golblum will be returning. So rest easy, and celebrate that bit with Rembert Brown. Goldblum is great and everyone knows it.

The real question that is posed by this news though, and for any Roland Emmerich film, is this: Will the White House be destroyed? And if so, how? And if not, what Icon of American Governance will be destroyed in a most totally bodacious way?

This is the MOST IMPORTANT question when it comes to this sequel. As a rule, the White House fairs poorly in the blockbuster vision of Emmerich, having been destroyed by aliens, (obviously) but also by a tsunami in 2012,

and by terrorists in White House Down.

We’ve also seen the freezing of the Statue of Liberty, the destruction of the US Capitol (a couple times), the Washington Monument broken in half, Manhattan flooded and destroyed in its entirety, and many other beloved architectural structures reduced to Emmerich-ian rubble.

But Roland Emmerich faces a unique challenge in any Independence Day sequel. As we all surely remember, inside the Independence Day Cinematic Universe the White House-and basically every other building on the whole fucking earth-was already blown up by those pesky aliens.

What’s left to blow up? Seriously? Did the whole world rebuild everything everywhere in a mere 20 years?* Where does this leave us, Roland? What’s left? What matters? Is nothing sacred?

(SPOILER: Probably).
