If you’ve been reading The Stake long, you’ll know that we really love director Paul Thomas Anderson. Like, really love him. Which is why we’re so excited to see the first trailer for his upcoming Thomas Pynchon adaptation, Inherent Vice.
First thoughts: This looks like a bit more of a comedic turn for Paul Thomas Anderson, a mode he hasn’t really explored since Punchdrunk Love or even Boogie Nights. With a comic take on a noir narrative and a befuddled gumshoe as its hardboiled detective, the movie has a bit of a Big Lebowski vibe so far. I’m no great fan of the book (except for The Crying of Lot 49, Pynchon is a taste I haven’t quite acquired), but I’m hopeful that the movie will be worthwhile.
