The late, great James Gandolfini died last year, but you’ll get one more chance to see him act in a theatrical release this month when his last film, The Drop, releases on September 19.
The Drop is scripted by Dennis Lehane, the crime writer responsible for the novels Gone Baby Gone, Mystic River, and Shutter Island. He also wrote for The Wire, so there’s a good pedigree associated with this film. It also stars Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace.
September’s turning out to be a good month for crime fiction, what with A Walk Among the Tombstones coming out this week and The Drop releasing the week after. It’s a perfect transition into the fall/winter movie season: plot and character-driven stories with a bit of gravitas and darkness to prepare us for the heavier releases to come.
