Is Marvel Done with Iron Man?

A recent interview with Robert Downey, Jr. has some folks wondering if Marvel Studios is done making solo Iron Man movies. Speaking to Variety, Downey, Jr. said: “There isn’t one in the pipe,” and, “No, there’s no plan for a fourth ‘Iron Man.’”

So, is Iron Man 3 the last of the Iron Man series? To answer that, we turn to Liz Lemon:

It’s possible there is an alternate universe where the most successful franchise in film history would retire its most successful character, but trust me when I say that universe is yet undiscovered.

Marvel/Disney has made $2.5 Billion on the three Iron Man films. The character, which jump-started the domination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also featured prominently in the third most successful film of all time in The Avengers. He will do so again in next year’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron. And, again in 2018 for The Avengers 3: The Third One, which the actor is under contract for.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is mapped out until 2028. The notion that Iron Man 4 has been bumped out by Ant-Man and Dr. Strange is quite nearly impossible to believe.
