Today, news comes that David Yates will be returning to the wizard world by directing the upcoming adaptation of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Yates directed the second half of the Harry Potter series and did so with great conviction. Each of his movies has its charms, and Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows Part 2 are really excellent films, in my estimation.
Fantastic Beasts will provide the foundation of a new wizarding world film trilogy, focusing on the life of Newt Scamander, author of the eponymous textbook. It will follow the adventures of the man tasked with writing the book 70 years before the life of Harry Potter.
It’s always a challenge to ask viewers to come back to a beloved fictional world. As a fan the Harry Potter films, I’m of course thrilled to have the opportunity to return to the world that I’ve enjoyed and spent countless hours inhabiting. But I’m also aware of how easy it is to lose the magic, years later.
If Fantastic Beasts feels like little more than a money-making enterprise, well, that kind of behavior can have retroactive negative impacts. It’s easy to tell when a beloved franchise is exploited to capitalize on an existing fan base.
But with the news of David Yates, its easy to be excited for a little while longer. He knows this world, and he knows how to tell a damn good story inside it.
