  1. Something that struck me was the sense of wonder and positivity that Meena experienced when she was touring the museum. It made me realize that sometimes you can go through several books without reading scenes of outright joy like this. It’s important that characters can be inspired and not just down in the dumps all the time. And it seems like there are plenty of harsh challenges ahead for Meena, so this was refreshing up front.

It’s probably a bit premature to speculate on who the “girl” in the title is, since there are a few contenders. That may have to wait until we get further in.

  2. I wasn’t as enamored with the opening line as you were, Andrew. So far my impressions of the book are captured better with another quote, from page 8. “It’s clear that life continues after trauma. What’s not clear is whether it’s worth continuing to live.” I feel like this encapsulates Meena’s entire mental state of what we’ve seen through Book 4. She has survived. This is clear. She is moving on. She’ll hash out later whether or not moving on was worth it (from the first few pages I’ve gotten into Book 5 she is certainly leaning in one direction more than another right now).

Overall it’s hard to say what I think as of yet. Thus far it’s just introductions to the characters and their feelings and idiosyncrasies and I feel like I’ve just accustomed myself to the cadence of the world. I don’t feel like either of our narrators are reliable. For me, too, it is an adjustment to a less familiar culture and this new world. Once I got into the flow I have enjoyed the book thus far, though. I am pretty excited to see what happens next.
