Sinead O’Connor’s 10th studio album is scheduled for release August 12. It’s original title was The Vishnu Room, which was quite an O’Connor-esque title for a record. O’Connor is a great titler of records by the way, with her 1990 album I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got, being not only one my favorite records ever, but one of my favorite titles, too.
Anyway. Yesterday O’Connor announced that she was changing the title of her new album to I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss.
After the title change, the singer took to her blog, to “explain the title of my forthcoming album IS taken from Sheryl Sandberg’s Ban Bossy campaign. A few months back when I saw the phrase ‘I’m not bossy, I’m the boss’ and became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign, I wished I could re-name the album, since indeed it can be tricky being a female boss and I think Sheryl’s campaign is a terribly important one.”
Other women in music have taken up this cause, most notably Beyonce, who was one of many celebrities featured in the I’m Not Bossy campaign.
As for renaming a record, it’s very late in the game for a title change. But a fortuitous photo shoot gave O’Connor the opportunity. “At the stage I became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign it was too late to change the album title because the sleeve was already in print. But last week when the record company received the promo shots, which included the cover shot you now see, they asked could they change the planned cover to the current one, and that allowed me the opportunity of changing the title. Very Happy Girl.”
Here’s the promo shot to which O’Connor refers.
