Sofia Coppola makes interesting films. Some of those films great (Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation). Some are not (Marie Antoinette). Some are highly fascinating if not easy to watch (Bling Ring). But one thing that’s safe to say about the director: Coppola has a unique and accomplished voice in film, and her work is always worth seeing.
I assume this will be true of her latest announced project: The Little Mermaid.
According to Variety, “Not much is known about how this take will compare to previous versions of the Hans Christian Andersen novel, which followed a mermaid who wished to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.”
At the very least, I think we all hope that Coppola’s turn at the tale will take a bit more of the madness from the HC Anderson story than the Disney version. Because the Disney version is boring (I said it).
Just imagine Coppola’s live-action Ariel. Weird. I hope its Emma Watson. Specifically, this version of Emma Watson.

I recently wrote about this too (http://www.focusfilm.co.uk/sofia-coppola-direct-little-mermaid-7350) and I love Sofia Coppola, so I am very intrigued to see what she will do with her version.
