In case you managed to miss this yesterday, the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer is now available:
It’s safe to say that prior to adaptation, Guardians of the Galaxy was a little known Marvel title in the American movie-going imagination. For most people, this will be the first encounter with these characters. Which made it a surprising choice, but also an inspired one. It’s not surprising then that the first trailer operates as introductory: here are the Guardians, what a rag-tag bunch’a misfits, etc. etc.
What is surprising, to me at least, is that the trailer’s primary attitude is not action, or sci-fi world building or Avengers-style jokes, but charm. Just a charming little 100-million dollar box-office juggernaut Marvel adaptation. That’s encouraging. Because the Guardians in Guardians of the Galaxy are weird. And charming turns out to be an appropriate attitude to take if your lead actor is Chris Pratt, and he’s supported by a tree and a raccoon.
As for how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to incorporate Guardians of the Galaxy with Avengers and all the rest, well, it’s exciting to see the action shift continually off-planet. Opening up the universe has a lot of exciting potential.
