Stephen King fans, rejoice—an adaptation of the horror master’s fantastical series is back from the dead. A Dark Tower adaptation is a possibility that has tantalized King fans for ages: at one point JJ Abrams held the rights to the series, then they went to Ron Howard, and then, inexplicably, the project was dead. For a while, it seemed like one of those things that everybody wanted to happen, but, due to the vagaries of Hollywood, just wouldn’t.
Now, it seems that a Dark Tower adaptation might be back from the dead. Howard is reportedly in talks with Netflix to produce the King series to the streaming giant. Howard’s already worked with Netflix for the fourth season of Arrested Development, so their continuing to work together seems like a strong possibility. Even more tantalizing is the mention of Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul in connection with the project. Paul says he’s had “a ton of meetings” with Howard about it, and that “they’re definitely planning on making it.”
We’ll see. We’ll also have to wait to see what form an eventual adaptation will take—most reports mention a plan to make three movies and a TV series, but surely the mention of Netflix might push this more in the direction of a TV serial? Personally, that sounds like a more promising possibility to me: generally, I find King’s worlds to be too intricate to be adequately adapted in a movie. A TV show seems like a better choice to fully capture the world of the Dark Tower series.
Wow, Netflix would be such a great format for the Dark Tower. Back in the day we used to speculate about the heavenly idea of DT showing up on HBO, because yeah a movie seems unfeasible. I like Netflix content better than HBO these days, so if the stars (nyuk, nyuk) align, this could be awesome…or at least not bad.
