Norwegian crime novelist writing a noir retelling of Macbeth

Norwegian crime novelist Jo Nesbo—most famous for his bestselling Harry Hole novels—is tackling a noirish retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, reports The Bookseller. It’s part of a project called The Hogath Shakespeare, in which famous writers will retell their favorite Shakespeare plays in prose for modern readers, with the books set to release in 2016, the 400th anniversary of the great playwright’s death.

Also part of the project are Margaret Atwood, retelling The Tempest; Anne Tyler, retelling The Taming of the Shrew; Jeannette Winterson, retelling A Winter’s Tale; and Howard Jacobson, retelling The Merchant of Venice.

Says Nesbo of the appeal of Macbeth,

Macbeth is a story that is close to my heart because it tackles topics I’ve been dealing with since I started writing. A main character who has the moral code and the corrupted mind, the personal strength and the emotional weakness, the ambition and the doubts to go either way. A thriller about the struggle for power, set both in a gloomy, stormy crime noir-like setting and in a dark, paranoid human mind.

Sounds awesome to me. Macbeth is among the darkest and twistiest of Shakespeare’s works, so I can’t wait to see what an acclaimed crime novelist does with it. The prospect of Margaret Atwood tackling The Tempest is also a delightful one, as Atwood is one of my favorite novelists, The Tempest one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. This series will be one to watch for in 2016.
