Two new leading ladies to manage daily life with practicing law

Two new stories are about to launch in different media platforms that have a lot in common and one glaring difference.

The first is a new sitcom on USA called Benched. The single-camera comedy will star Eliza Coupe as “a dedicated, career-driven corporate attorney who has a very public nervous breakdown after getting passed up for an expected promotion and finds herself working as a public defender. Her personal and professional worlds are turned upside down when she joins the ranks of the legal world’s underdogs and very quickly realizes that the law isn’t quite as fair as she once thought.”

Coupe was a revelation on Happy Endings-that very funny and unfortunately canceled comedy from ABC. Coupe’s Jane Kerkovich-Williams was one half of a marriage that was truly a rare treat on television. Not only inter-racial, but fun-loving, sexually vibrant, gender-role blurring, emotional and fiercely committed. Losing Coupe and Damon Wayans Jr. and their domestic life is a loss we all feel.

But Coupe’s return to television as a lawyer struggling with the law is welcome, and the addition of Party Down* creator John Enbom as show-runner bodes quite well for Benched.

Moving on.

The second leading lawyer debuting soon is Jennifer Walters. Walters is a committed, hard-working lawyer at a large firm who struggles to balance her daily practice with the struggle of trying to be good at everything she does-managing her relationships, for example, and fighting super-villains.

You may know Jennifer Walters by her other name, She-Hulk.

CBR has an interview with Charles Soule, who is writing the new title and also happens to day-job as a lawyer. Say’s Soule of Ms. Walters: “Her cases (and clients) are going to be pretty weird, but this isn’t only about Jen’s job. It’s about Jen. I mean, no one is just their job, and that’s truer for Jennifer Walters than most. People will be gunning for her, and she’ll get wrapped up in superhero craziness just like every other Marvel character.”

The She-Hulk on-going series kicks off in February. she-hulk1
