I am obsessed with the detective tradition and police procedurals, so the news that HBO is working on a series called True Detective is great news. The first season stars real-life buds Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as cops on a seventeen-year manhunt for a serial killer in Louisiana.
The trailer is gorgeous and creepy, and that opening line-”The world needs bad men; we keep the other bad men from the door”-pretty much encapsulates the entire antihero detective tradition, from its roots in drug-addled Sherlock Holmes through the haunted PIs of Hammet and Chandler and up to contemporary bad cops like Luther.
Vulture reports that the first season is eight episodes, and that any future seasons will spin out like FX’s American Horror Story, as self-contained miniseries with different stories, characters, and settings.
