Liam Neeson is the antithesis of a character actor. He has worked himself into an acting rut that is a perfect Liam Neeson-shaped rut. Any time Neeson appears on screen, whether in person or just in voice, we know it’s him. This isn’t to say Neeson isn’t a good actor. He just always plays himself. So, now, we have this really interesting looking movie coming out about Mark Felt, the man known as “Deep Throat” and the one who brought down President Nixon during the Watergate scandal. The trailer reveals Neeson playing Neeson playing Mark Felt.
There’s nothing that really stands out about the trailer but one thing: it feels extraordinarily timely. One has to wonder if that is purposeful. Here is a man hellbent on unveiling the truth and not letting anyone, not the White House, not even the FBI that he works for, get away with “alternative facts.” The trailer even makes the point, more than once, of making it clear that Mark Felt believed the government answered to the FBI and not the other way around. The trailer did something to me emotionally. It made me want Mark Felt to expose President Trump. In this way, this trailer does exactly what all movie trailers should do.
It is hard not to see to the Robert Mueller-driven Russia/Trump Administration investigation all over this. You know what they say: Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
