Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One debuted its first trailer today at Comic-Con. Which means the circle of movies-to-video games-to-movies is complete.
If you’re unfamiliar, Ready Player One is a book by Ernest Cline, steeped in 70s and 80s pop culture. The book is meant to serve nostalgia to readers in their 30s and 40s, and it does. Having Steven Spielberg direct the film is a nice touch, since he also directed or produced most of the movies you’re nostalgic for anyway.
The plot of Ready Player One is, basically, a person plays a quest-based video game.
I’m just going to be honest: This trailer looks really dumb. It looks like a movie trailer for a youtube channel that allows viewers to watch other people play video games. Still. Youtube channels featuring people playing video games are all the rage, apparently, so what do I know?
Either way, we know better than to judge a movie by its trailer. Especially one from Steven Spielberg.
