The Justice League Part 1 Official Trailer #1 arrived today. Just in time to satisfy the fix of my Zack Snyder obsession.
Justice League comes fast upon the heels of the very bad Suicide Squad, which followed the also (but not quite as) bad Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Since those films came out, Ben Affleck changed his mind about directing The Batman, and even began wondering if he wanted to keep playing the part. Which means, in franchise well-being terms, a lot is riding on The Justice League Part 1.
Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman will hit theaters this June, and if that film delivers, it’s possible that the pressure on Justice League will lighten a bit. But I doubt it.
Zack Snyder’s vision of the DC Universe has been problematic for some (most?) comic book fans, but I’m still of the opinion that his philosophical take on the world (as much as I don’t like it) is the most interesting thing going on in these otherwise dreary picture. BvS allowed him to play his games inside the religion and politics and violence spheres that he obviously loves. Whether Justice League will afford the same opportunity remains to be seen.
As for the trailer itself? Well, it’s a team-up movie of heroes with some annoying rock ‘n roll covers turned up too loud. So it’s pretty crummy, and based on track record the film will be just as crummy. But the heroes look good and I love to be surprised.
