Entertainment Weekly has a look at the new nightmare child-haunting monster clown Pennywise, to be featured in the latest adaptation of Stephen King’s It.
The look eschews the Tim Curry-version of the 1990 TV mini-series, which went with a regular guy in a clownsuit monster. Instead, Andrés Muschietti, director of 2017’s It, has opted for a Elizabethan era clown costume.
Janie Bryant designed the costume and look. Bryant’s most notable costume design work is also one of the new century’s most iconic: Mad Men. But her Pennywise draws more from her history on Deadwood.
It’s difficult to get a sense of how this new Pennywise will play in a single still. But for my money, this is ripe nightmare fodder for a whole new generation of 12 year olds. So, on that front, nice work, Ms. Bryant.
