The notable detail about DC’s latest animated feature, Batman: The Killing Joke, is that it is rated-R. Which is interesting enough I suppose, given the recent push for R-ratings in the superhero genre. The source material certainly warrants an R-rating–what with the paralyzing and sexual exploitation of Barbara Gordon–and fans were psyched to hear that the movie would embrace the violence.
But you know what’s not that interesting? This trailer for The Killing Joke.
What’s up with the animation here? It looks like a crappy version of the animation style from the 1992 (admittedly tremendous) Batman The Animated Series. Perhaps the plan was to match the animation to the visual style of Alan Moore’s original graphic novel.
Even so, it has a real clunky feel; one that feels marked by haste rather than artistry. Maybe another month in the cooker could have done this project some good.
