The Minnesota Opera is commissioning an opera version of Stephen King’s The Shining, the Star Tribune reports. I don’t know much about opera but this strikes me as objectively awesome news on every possible level. King’s story of a troubled family shut up in a haunted hotel, often cited as one of the best horror novels of all time, is perfect material for an opera.
The opera, which will reportedly hew closely to King’s novel rather than Kubrick’s film adaptation, is set to premiere in 2016.
This is a big month for The Shining and for King. In addition to the opera news, a long-awaited sequel to The Shining, titled Doctor Sleep, is set to release on September 24.
