News came this weekend that Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update will replace Seth Meyers with Cecily Strong. Meyers will take over Late Night duties from Jimmy Fallon, who will be moving to The Tonight Show. The musical chairs of NBC late-nighters is long expected, but the announcement of Strong to take over at the SNL News Desk is a terrific surprise.
Having joined Saturday Night Live only last year, it became obvious quickly that Cecily Strong was the best new acquisition the show had made in years. Strong made her appearances memorable from her first show, and she was rewarded quickly with recurring characters and featured parts. That she was so recognized as Weekend Update ready, and will be taking up the best job the show has to offer after her first year, only reiterates what regularly viewers already knew: Cecily Strong is the funniest cast-member on SNL in years.
The Weekend Update desk was the launching pad for two of television’s funniest females of the past decade. Hopefully Cecily Strong can live up to that precedent. No small task, but don’t be nervous.
@sethmeyers lets hope I make it through the first show without barfing or fainting!
